Business expenses

purchases1

SVA had a day trip down to Columbus today, and as a result I spent a potentially-reckless amount of money at the Wexner Center bookstore. My rationale is that, dividing my time as I do between Windsor and Winnipeg, I’m not usually presented with the opportunity to buy art books (at least in person) more than once or twice a year.

That only goes partway toward explaining why these Miranda July pillowcases seemed necessary.

The books themselves are a bit more easily explained. I’m hoping that both Art and Artistic Research and Contemporary African Art since 1980 will be directly useful for one if not both of my courses. The Katharina Grosse book and the gargantuan Wolfgang Tillmans monograph? Well, I’m writing them off as professional expenditures on my taxes, anyway.

Makeshift embassy

loquats

I printed a whole bunch of wordless brochures, some with photos from in and around Windsor, other with pictures I’ve taken in Florida. There are six of them. I’m going to try and get by Staples tomorrow to pick up some of those dorky plastic literature-holders to display them in.

I purchased these ridiculous wall decorations at the Hobby Lobby in Ohio. I’m having the “vacations” cut from white vinyl. I should have those by tomorrow afternoon.

And I have 100 postcards of this image. I’m going to hit up Zellers this evening and pick up some Avery business-card sheets; I’ll put the original sign text (”Visit Windsor’s Famous / Sculpture Garden / On the Detroit River   It’s Free”) on those.

Before I leave Windsor, I may try to make one of those plastic desk organizers (with the pencil-cup tubes and the little wells for paper clips and whatnot) in the shape of the Renaissance Center.

If everything goes according to plan, I’ll be setting up a very bizarre, pretend Windsor-Floridian Embassy at the space downtown that Broken City is occupying this month. We’ll see how that goes. If that doesn’t come together, I can pitch it for Visual Fringe (such a potentially-interesting event; why, why does it have to be associated with “fringe theater?” So humiliating.)
